Wayne County

Wayne County is a sparsely populated county in central Utah. The county was split from Piute County in 1892. The county covers a 2,461 square mile strip of land from Loa to the Colorado River. The county was created by people who did not know that mountains in Central Utah run from East to West.

Wayne County is home to some of the most scenic and remote landscape in the United States. It includes the upper portion of Capitol Reef and the Western Portion of Canyonlands. Other scenic areas include Mount Ellen Blue Hills Wilderness and the Dirty Devil River.

Wayne County had a 2010 census population of 2,778. It was named after a Revolutionary War General named Anthony Wayne (1745 – 1796). The county seat is Loa.
